The Tao of Web Design

News

Having recently revisited Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching for a Business Book Review, I was thinking about how these principles can apply to website development and UX designs and how we at HyperWeb apply them. Is it possible to infuse the modern requirements of digital creation for businesses that emphasise efficiency, innovation and user satisfaction with ancient wisdom? Is it something we do because it is natural to us or because it is a fit for human nature more than 2000 years after it was written? Let’s go through the principles highlighted in my book review in the context of website development and UX design.

The Flow of Tao in UX Design

The Principle of Flow

The Tao Te Ching emphasises the importance of flowing with the natural order like a river navigating its course. We integrate this principle into our website development through our understanding of user needs and adapting to changes in user needs, market trends, and technological advances. Instead of forcing a fixed structure or method, we believe a successful website should be flexible, adaptable, intuitive, and responsive to the user’s natural intent. This expresses itself in clear navigation, concise and well-structured content, and a focus on the goals of the user. This means creating responsive designs that adapt seamlessly to different devices and screen sizes with intuitive navigation that guides users naturally through your site.

Key Takeaway: Design with flexibility. Create interfaces that adapt to user behaviour, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience. By embracing fluidity in your design, you create a more harmonious user experience.

Simplicity & Focus

The Beauty of Simplicity

In an era when information overload is in overdrive, simplicity and focus are key to getting noticed. As Lao Tzu states, “Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.” (Verse 67), reminding us of the value of prioritising what really matters to us and our users. This means eliminating unnecessary complexity and focusing on the core functionality that adds value to the user experience. It also applies to information and visuals, reducing clutter and minimising animations and distracting elements.

Key Takeaway: Streamlined design. Prioritise essential features and create a clean, uncluttered interface that enhances user engagement. A minimalist approach not only looks sophisticated but also improves load times and user experience.

Humility & Service

Humble Leadership in Design

Great leaders, according to Lao Tzu, are those who prioritise the needs of others. In the context of web design, this translates to user-centered design principles. We focus on developing experiences that are beneficial for the user, rather than self-serving.

“The best leaders are those the people hardly know exist,” (Verse 17) suggests a leadership style that is subtle yet effective. Applying a similar approach to web design we develop interfaces that are seamless and intuitive, allowing users to find the information they need and follow a path to a conversion more effortlessly.

Key Takeaway: Focus on the user. Design with empathy and put the user’s needs at the forefront of your process.

The Power of Non-action (Wu Wei)

Non-action in UX Design

Wu Wei, often misunderstood as passivity, actually advocates for actions that are in harmony with the natural flow of things. “The Tao does nothing, yet nothing is left undone,” (Verse 37) suggests that effective action is often unobtrusive and subtle. In website development and design, this means creating experiences that feel natural and unobtrusive, guiding users without forceful or aggressive tactics.

Key Takeaway: Design intuitively. Allow users to flow through your website naturally, making their experience as effortless as possible.
